How Far in Advance Should You Schedule Blog Posts?

I'm the type of blogger who always has posts scheduled for a week in advance. This is great, in case you're ever sick or get really busy with things, but it also limits your ability to really keep up with current events and trends. With blogging, it isn't as much of an issue, as you can always move things around. However, with other mediums like YouTube, for example it can be much more difficult to stay current if you've preplanned a lot of your content.

The Internet moves quickly and moves on quickly, so responding to a viral video or blog post weeks later doesn't pack the same punch as if you responded to it immediately. I have found preplanning a lot of my content does create this problem, however I'm so high strung when it comes to work and getting things out of the way, that there's no way I could let things sit for too long. It's just too scary for me.

If you're a blogger, how do you feel about preplanned content vs. putting up content the day before? I read about someone recently who has 200+ posts scheduled already for the year! To me, I feel like that would be a huge deterrent in staying current as all of your content would need to be evergreen.

Thoughts?

  1. I try to mix up my content. I have weekly prompts that help keep my blog current (like my Things I Love Thursdays posts are always written on Tuesday or Wednesday of that week). I have my evergreen content (like my Blogging Like a Boss Series or other blogging tips). And then there's my more personal, every day type posts that help keep my blog on track, up to date and very in the now.

Some of my content is done a week or two in advance, while some is written and even published in the same day. I'm one of those bloggers who doesn't feel comfortable planning too far ahead! Weird, I know. But it's what works for me.

Holidays are different. I feel like last year I didn't plan ahead far enough and missed out on some great opportunities for more quality posts, gift guides, and monetization. This year, I'll be planning holiday stuff a month in advance (ugh I'm already working on Valentine's Day!).

  2. I have up to 2 weeks of post scheduled or sometimes I have the whole month scheduled. That way I have more time for social media and to engage with more people.

  3. I try to have first drafts of all my posts written the month before but I only finally schedule my posts the week before.

  4. I run a little mix of both. Like I have a bunch of posts scheduled out in advance, but most of them aren't date specific so if something comes up that I need to write about instead I just move them back a little and put the new post in their place. I have some saved in draft too for if ever I just have nothing to say but I want to post something.
