5 Tips for Fighting Fatigue

As a lupus patient, fighting fatigue is one of my number one, everyday battles. So how do I deal with it? Here are five simple ways I try to (but don't always!) come out on top:

1. Getting Enough Rest

With everyone's busy lives, this one is quite a challenge. But if I know I'm going somewhere the next day, I try to get in as much sleep as possible to ensure that I won't be tired the next day. Know your body and know how much sleep you need per night. I know it isn't always possible to actually get a full night's sleep (especially with kids and other commitments), but if you have an important event coming up, make it a priority.

2. Schedule Time to Unwind

Again, not always easy with a full life, but I find that if you schedule in at least 30 minutes before bed to unwind, it is a great way to start to get into the mood of sleep. There is nothing worse than lying in bed worrying about anything and everything whilst desperately trying to get to sleep. Grab a good book (nothing too heavy, mind you!), some decaffeinated tea and try to focus on sleep vibes. Put away the computer and your phone, as these things tend to not only wake up your brain, but distract you as well.

3. Exercise

Sometimes I find it difficult to sleep, and therefore, am fatigued the next day, because I have not exercised enough. I also find that exercise can sometimes (NOTE: SOMETIMES!--know your limits!) help when I'm feeling really fatigued. It can either wake you up or help you actually have a restful night's sleep.

4. Limiting Sugar

This one is rough for me, because I have a sweet tooth this size of Texas. Seriously, I am about to go buy some Oreos right now because I've eaten too many of my boyfriend's stash. And I'll probably end up eating those as well. But as amazing as it tastes, it isn't conducive to feeling your best. Instead, limit your sugar intake and up your protein. For me, anyway, I find that this alone really wakes me up!

5. Quick Bursts of Energy

If you've really run out of gas and need a quick burst of energy, you can always fill up quickly on the caffeine or other types of energy drinks. This isn't the best way, obviously, as you're going to feel worse in the long run, but if you need to get through a meeting or presentation and you're already lagging, then it isn't the worst idea. Other ideas include closing your eyes for a few moments (honestly, when I've really struggled with energy on some days, I have had to close my eyes in the bathroom!) or doing something like quick exercises to get your body going. Not the most glamorous, but at least it does the job.
