GUEST POST: How to Bag the Job with Your Blog by Lizzie Benton

Lizzie of Lizaboo has decided to grace my blog with a guest post all about getting hired with your blog. Here are her top tips:

How To Bag The Job With Your Blog
The New Year always makes us think of new goals and dreams that we would like to achieve for the year, and while some of them may be broken already (like quitting chocolate oops), often one of those resolutions can be a new job.
Last year I was eager for a career move, and despite being scared about entering a new industry and meeting new people, I took the leap and I’ve never looked back.
It wasn’t that I hated my old job but I just felt like I was stuck in a bit of job rut with no idea which direction I really wanted to go.
Opening up to exciting new opportunities and pushing myself was one of the best decisions I made, and it’s incredible to think just how much I’ve learnt already in such a short space of time.
Everyone goes through the doubt that they’re not good enough for their dream job, but it’s all a myth. (Unless of course your dream is to be an astronaut then you might need a rethink.)
But if you put your mind to it anything is possible.

Make Contact
When looking into future companies that I wanted to work for I did a little social stalking.
This gave me the opportunity to see what they’re all about and how they talk to people and interact with their own employees.
Once I had decided who I was going try to bag a job with I simply started to join in with their conversations, this is a great little tip I learnt from this video which basically says that finding common interests with your future team mates will land you the interview.

Grab Their Attention
There’s a huge amount of job candidates and it’s so daunting when putting yourself out there.
Separating yourself from the competition is the only way you’re going to secure that interview and generate some interest around you.
As well as the common paper CV, I also invested in branded USB sticks such as these with the company logo I was applying for, filled with not only my CV but pieces of my past work and articles I had written from my blog.
With a colourful envelope (yes very Elle from Legally Blonde) addressed to the director of the company I sent it all off and crossed my fingers.
Be Relevant
Of course the one tool I did have at my disposal was my little old blog.
Not only did I start writing a few interesting articles that the company might like, I also ensured I was posting regularly so that they could get a better understanding of what I’m all about.
My blog encompasses everything about me, like a window into my world. And surely if they liked what they saw they would consider me above the other candidates.
Whatever big career move your planning in 2015 just remember to have confidence in yourself and don’t underestimate the power of the blog!
